Education and Experience Expectations

Successful candidates will demonstrate physical stamina, arm and hand strength, and the ability to work on ladders to reach high ceilings or walls, among many other skills, such as the ability to:

  • Manage themselves, their time and the things they use on the job
  • Work independently and as part of a team
  • Work quickly and with accuracy
  • Work neatly and clean up worksite debris after each shift
  • Follow directions
  • Read and follow labels, safety warnings and guidelines
  • Train helpers and assign work to assistants
  • Prioritize work schedules each day
  • Select proper equipment for each specific project
  • Problem-solve and seek direction when needed
  • Communicate
  • Understand spoken and written information
  • Listen to others and ask questions
  • Speak clearly so listeners can understand

In addition:

  • High school diploma an asset
  • Previous painting experience preferred
  • Proficiency with painting tools and equipment a plus
  • Ability to safely operate various vehicles and equipment an advantage

Rizzo Brothers is especially interested in painters who are craftsmen like EJ Rizzo and who enjoy job satisfaction. Below is a small sampling of what painters who are craftsmen need to know how to do well (or be eager to learn):

  • Cover surfaces with cloth or plastic and tape off areas to ensure protection of all spaces not targeted for painting.
  • Clean, scrape, sand, prime or seal surfaces prior to painting to ensure proper adherence.
  • Fill cracks, holes and joints with caulk, putty, plaster or other fillers, using caulking guns or putty knives.
  • Apply various finishes to buildings, rooms or other structures, including primers or sealers.
  • Apply several coats according to paint directions.
  • Apply touchups or second coats.
  • Remove paint splatters and clean up the workspace and equipment, including brushes and spray guns, when finished.
  • Assemble and erect scaffolding, movable and immovable staging and various rigging to gain access to difficult areas; move furniture and equipment as necessary.
  • Maintain proper ventilation.
  • Maneuver ladders and necessary materials around jobsite as assigned.
  • Operate spray-painting and sandblasting equipment.
  • Remove and adhere wallcovering; align wallpaper patterns.
